Wonder Woman 1984 opened in theaters and on HBO Max on Christmas Day 2020. Wonder Woman 1984 became a Covid victim and a sacrificial lamb to the streaming wars. Now here’s what happened: Birds of Prey bombed. Still not a hit, but A) WB would have gotten credit for giving both Jenkins and Gunn carte blanche and B) The Suicide Squad would have followed a well-liked and commercially successful The Batman in June 2021. A drop on par with Secret Life of Pets 2 ($430 million versus $875 million) compared to Suicide Squad ($325 million domestic and $745 million global), it still would have earned around $366 million global. Most folks were indifferent about Suicide Squad while this “don’t call it a sequel” follow-up lacked Will Smith, Batman and Joker. James Gunn’s R-rated, $180 million The Suicide Squad still likely would have bombed in August 2021. The coexistence of Wonder Woman 1984, Birds of Prey and Joker would boost the notion of DC Films as an “each movie is different” franchise while rehabilitating WB as a filmmaker-friendly studio.
